Clean off the 60 years of caked on pitch and grease, mask, sand and paint. We have the knowledge, we have the power!Д¬ompletely dis-assembled, there are only about 2 dozen parts to this saw, so cleaning and painting were simple and pretty easy. My photo skills being what they are, what you are seeing is a cast iron table surface that is bulged upward about 1/32' in the center between the two miter gauge slots. The heat required for brazing is pretty high and often causes. The repairs were two well performed brazes (?) and look to be good to go. Remember when I said that these saws are top heavy? I wonder if the designers would've guessed that even these lower quality units would still be around and in use 60 or so years after they were originally built? Products manufacture to the lowest common denominator and price point has turned this antique into a high quality/value tool that REALLY makes new saws seem cheap and flimsy. I think that these machines were targeted at the home hobbyist woodworker or small shop, often as a combo unit with a jointer on the side. It sure would've been nice if these pieces had been made out of a stronger material like cast steel. This is also very common, but I am not worried in the least. This is the rear trunnion and you can see that the primary retaining bolt has split the casting a bit. I have a feeling that even if it were still there, it wouldn't be for long. This is the front trunnion, where the 90 degree stop would be located if it had one. Most everything else on these saws is well built, but these. These saws are top-heavy and if it goes over hard, these are the weakest link. It's that stuff that cheap cabinet door handles and other things are made out of and looks and feels a bit like aluminum.

And they are cast out of a pot metal called Zamak. The entire (HEAVY!) weight of the table and fence are supported by these two ridiculously puny trunnions. If you are looking at buying one of these, there are a few things to look for. A bit goofy and inconvenient, it also hasДЄ very small footprint for it's size and is heavy and dead simple. some early canadian made rockwells used the cast iron 3200 fence for a while that fence is one of the rockwell fences, probably a 6200 or 6201. It's a pretty good bet that you will find your saw in either the rockwell or delta pages on vintage. The only machine not replaced with a rockwell was the 3400 lathe, it stayed unchanged until the factory closed, not sure when production ended in guelph, early 80's maybe Similar changes were made to virtually all of the old callander foundry tools, basically replaced with us rockwell designs but made at the guelph foundry, they even made the unisaw there replacing the old beaver 4200 cabinet saw, the unisaw was labled a beaver 7200 the 22 were replaced with rockwell 52 models in the late fifties. same with the tablesaws except the 1200, it stayed vitually unchanged.

the 3800 jointer was replaced by the 4800, actually a rockwell 37-220. the 4 inch jointer (2800) was one of the first, it was replaced by the delta/rockwell homecraft and became a beaver 2801. Mfg plate is for Guelph so not us Rockwell design.ДЄll of the original beaver models were replaced gradually over several years with us rockwell designs.
